A clean, uniform Instagram grid is one of those things that instantly makes an account look professional. And the fastest way to get one is to make every post the same size: 1080 by 1080 pixels.
Instagram displays feed posts as squares. If you upload a landscape or portrait photo, Instagram crops it for you, and that crop is often not what you wanted. Someone's feet get chopped off, or your subject ends up off-center. Uploading a ready-made square fixes that completely.
You can crop the photo down to a square, which means losing the sides. Or you can pad it: keep the whole photo and fill the extra space with a background color. Both are valid.
